I will be teaching kindergarten this year. My philosophy of education is creating a positive and safe learning environment where students are actively engaged in what they are learning. I became a teacher because I believe learning is a lifelong process that is guided and modeled through enthusiasm and commitment to best practices.

I am from Statesboro, Ga. Outside of school, I love spending time with family and traveling to new places. I read books in my spare time and drink lots of coffee. I am excited to be returning to Mill Creek and look forward to an amazing year.

Valerie Ray - Special Education
Valerie Ray

Hi, my name is Valerie Ray. You’ve heard of the book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Well, all I really need to know about teaching I learned through my finger-painting experiences in preschool. Maybe someday I’ll write the book, but for now I’m excited to get started teaching as a Special Education Teacher at Mill Creek Elementary. I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Printmaking and worked in the commercial art field for seven before teaching. Through a series of events, I discovered that my niche was working with students with special needs so I obtained my Masters in Early Childhood Special Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. I couldn’t be happier that I made this career change and I now pour all the creativity I used in the commercial art field into my teaching. I taught Preschool Special Education for five years and then obtained certification in Special Ed Interrelated where I have taught for the majority of my teaching career.

I was born and raised in Virginia and moved to Georgia in 2001. I fell in love with Georgia and I am here to stay.  When I am not teaching, I am usually gardening, riding my bike, spending time with friends and family, or spending time socializing at the dog park with my dog.

Barbara Woodson - Kindergarten
Barbara Woodson

Hello, my name is Barbara Woodson. I am a native of Augusta, Georgia. I am married to Reverend Daniel Woodson, Pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Daniel and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in June. We have two beautiful daughters. Their names are Jocelyn and Danielle. Jocelyn will be starting her sophomore year in August while Danielle will be a rising 4th grader.

I began my path in the educational field by being a volunteer when Jocelyn started Pre K. Upon being a part of Jocelyn’s daily routine at her school, I perceived I needed to do more. So, I started substituting. While in this position, I fell in love with teaching. The students were so lovable and full of energy. I enjoyed every minute being a part of each child I met. It was like a breath of fresh air seeing their smiling faces every day. I later obtain my Associate of Arts Degree from East Georgia College and became a paraprofessional. However, I later realized my destiny was to be a teacher. I competed my Bachelor’s in Science at Walden University. I graduated Magma Cam Laude. I am honored to be a bright and faithful addition to the Mustang family.
